Being sun safe this summer!!

Now that we are officially in British Summertime!!! I wanted to take a moment to talk about staying sun-safe.

Although it is a wonderful feeling having a sun tan, it comes with risks. We need the vitamin D which the sun provides us, but we must be sensible and strike a balance between staying safe and gaining the benefits. 1 in 54 people in the UK are expected to be diagnosed with malignant melanoma during their lifetime.... a scary statistic I think you'll agree.

Sunburn can happen at any time, even if it is cloudy. Wind burn is extremely dangerous as the cooling effects of the wind prevent you from feeling the sensations of burning.

Tanning will not prevent you from ever burning and you leave yourself open to the harmful effects of the sun. UV rays penetrate the outermost layer of the skin, and this continues deeper into the skin. Harmful UV rays then damage the skin cells. It is important to note that frequent and prolonged exposure to UV rays are highly likely to lead to skin cancers developing in later life.

Sun Safety Hints...

  • Avoid the hours between 11am - 3pm when the sun is at its strongest.

  • Ensure that you never burn! Not only is it risky, it hurts!!!

  • Use a high factor sunscreen. The SPF should be a minimum of 15 to protect yourself against UVB, and at least a 4 star UVA protection. Please also check the expiry date, most sunscreens have a short shelf life. Look for the open jar symbol (see pic above).

  • Re-apply sunscreen after you've been in water.

  • Cover up, wear a hat and sunglasses with UV protection.

  • Take particular care of babies and young children, their skin in extremely sensitive. Damage done in the younger years could lead to irreparable damage and skin cancers in later life.

Let's give a real life example of using out of date sun cream and read what the consequences of this were.... (permission has been given by the author of this Facebook post to use this story).

Let's talk sunbeds

Sunbeds, like the sun, emit harmful UV rays which damage the skin. A little known risk is that sunbeds damage the DNA of your skin cells.

Sometimes, but not always, sunbeds are marketed as 'a safe way to tan' or 'controlled tanning'. In truth, they offer you no more protection and you will still have to maintain a sunscreen regime when you're out in the sunshine. It eliminates NO risk whatsover, infact you could be doing yourself more harm than good. Along with all this it is important to note that harmful ageing effect of UV rays, your skin is likely to end up wrinkled, leathery looking and you'll look substantially older.

Sun Safe Tanning

Let's move onto something more posititive. There is a way for you to tan safely. Spray tanning is huge these days! Fake tanning has moved on from the old days of applying it by hand and ending up with patching streaks and looking orange. These days, us beauticians have gone high techy! We use machines and spray guns to give you a fabulous finish. And you haven't put your life at risk spending hours out in the sun!! You've simply stood in a tent and 8 hours later your amazing tan has developed.

Please note!!! It is important to add that a spray tan gives you absolutely NO protection from the sun or its harmful UV rays. You will still need to apply sunscreen.
