Facials - The Changing Seasons Effect on the Skin

I wanted to take a few minutes out of your day to talk to you about your skin. That fragile thing that covers our bodies. And is sometimes sorely neglected.

As the seasons change, the elements begin to influence our skin. During periods of change skin can lose its natural oils resulting in lose of moisture, and becoming much drier.

The outer layer of the skin may begin to feel dry and itchy. At this point you need to replace lost moisture to prevent issues such as dry cracked skin. This is all worth noting if you are prone to skin conditions such as dermatitis or eczema as these conditions can be aggravated by skin drying out.

Let's discuss other causes of adverse effects... Central heating used in the winter months creates a dry atmosphere, which clearly does our skin no favours at all! Comfort eating and not eating a healthy diet can have a detrimental effect. Take Halloween chocolate for instance, or Christmas cakes and biscuits. Avoid sugars, refined carbohydrates and fatty foods. We are more prone to colds and sickness during these months, and together with medication which may be being taken, will just add to the problem. And stay hydrated!

Along with a healthy diet, it is important to establish a regular skin care regime. Facials are an excellent and highly effective way of replacing essential oils. A facial treatment performed by a qualified therapist can be an extremely beneficial treatment, as well has being incredibly relaxing!

Facials include a cleansing treatment which is an essential part of any skincare routine. It should be part of everyone’s daily hygiene procedure. Toners are used to eliminate any traces of remaining cleanser. And it also invigorates the skin and tightens it.

Moisturisers ensure that the skin is smooth and supple. And creates a barrier between the elements and the surface of your skin. Essential for protecting and replacing moisture.

Exfoliation is a process where dead skin cells are removed, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. Once the skin is completely clean a mask can be applied. These can be very beneficial because they can contain vitamins and minerals. Masks can be deep cleansing, moisturising and refreshing. But please note that these products should be used carefully and correspond to your skin type.

Sometimes in the case of puffy, tired eyes, an eye cream is great to use around the eye area. Eye creams have many benefits... they are hydrating, reducing puffiness, they can be refreshing and have anti-wrinkle benefits.

A qualified therapist (that’s me!), can offer a heat treatment such as hot towels or steam. These treatments can deep cleanse the pores, removing dead skin cells and debris from the surface of the skin. Making it super clean!!

Therapists can also offer a facial massage treatment. This massage can be relaxing and relieve tension. Use of oils and creams will aid replacement of oils and moisture keeping the skin in great condition.

Professional treatments are a wonderful experience and sometimes a bit of a luxury. It’s worth noting that these products can be purchased over the counter. You can put in place a regular and effective facial routine to protect you from the elements.

As with all of my treatments, I also experience them before giving them to my clients. A facial massage treatment is amazing. Its relaxing, and just knowing that you are doing something good for your body is a really good feeling. I just want to share a couple of reviews I received recently from two of my lovely ladies….

“I can thoroughly recommend Karen's Deluxe Facial. Very relaxing and lovely products. Very refreshing in this hot weather.” Isabel

“I had a facial with Karen 2 days ago. My skin still feels lovely and smooth. The immediate after effect was like I was glowing and the moisture feeling stayed until I went to bed. The whole experience was lovely.” Sara
